MEET THE MAKER
RAY SHELDON
Ray Sheldon was born in Staffordshire. As a small boy he walked to school past the Minton factory and declared every day that he would work there when he grew up. He left school at the age of 15 to work in the ceramics industry and went on to become art director for Minton as well as designing for Wedgwood, Ralph Lauren and Liberty of London.
Ray's work explores the dynamics of the still life, between figuration and abstraction. A modernist at heart, he strives for simplicity by reducing a composition to its essential characteristics. Composition and colour are vital elements, with each painting reworked many times: objects rearranged, the negative spaces being as significant as the objects.
Relishing the play between the flat surface and the illusion of depth and solidity, Ray carefully prepares his own gesso boards and canvases, working the surface to become an integral part of each painting.
He now paints full time and his work continues to incorporate his beloved pottery and ceramics in abstracted forms. Ray's work is held in several public collections
