MEET THE MAKER

TERRY FROST

Sir Terry Frost was a painter and printmaker closely associated with the St Ives School of Art and one of the leading British artists of the 20th Century.

Born in Leamington Spa, Frost didn’t become an artist until he was in his 30s. During his army service in World War II, he met and was taught by Adrian Heath while held in Germany as a prisoner of war. Subsequently, he attended Camberwell School of Art, studying under Victor Pasmore. In 1951, he went to work as an assistant to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.

He became a prominent member of the Penwith Society, St Ives and had his first one-man exhibition in London at the highly-regarded Leicester Galleries in 1952 and his first New York show at the influential Bertha Schaefer Gallery in 1960. Frost taught at Bath Academy, Corsham, 1952 was a Gregory Fellow at Leeds University 1954-6 and taught at Leeds College of Art 1956-9. He lived in St Ives from 1959 to 63 before moving to Banbury.

His work features in many public and private collections
